Three things have been constant in my life: physical activity, writing and coaching. I have been active my whole life, started coaching in 1983, and started my first blog in 1999, in the early days of blogging. I called my first site Run For Joy, and you are now reading the third version of Run For Joy. In the early days, my blogs documented a lot of my personal life as professional athlete and a mum, including my thoughts on motherhood and how I balanced training with caring for children. While running was my passion for many years, the title is a metaphor for a much more all-encompassing intention I developed, to learn how to run from a place of passion and deep love, rather than to chase external rewards. During my most competitive years, I needed to stay connected to my joy of running, in a world that was rooted in chasing wins, fame and money.
You can read about some of my highest moments in sport in the list below, and I am proud of what I achieved, however, there have been many lessons learned and many set backs to overcome in my long career. In between the accomplishments I loved the rhythm of the hours and hours of training. And I had many coaches, team mates and people in my life who believed in me and supported me. I have much gratitude for both Athletics Canada and Triathlon Canada. This is what drives me to be a coach and to give back to sport at all levels.
Above all, I am a mom, and motherhood has been the greatest joy of my life. I became a mother in 2000 and again in 2005, while maintaining my racing, and I finished off my high performance career in 2006, when I was 39, winning a silver medal for Canada at the World Duathlon Championships. My kids were 6 and 1, and after that I spent some years devoting myself to being a mother, and life was busy and full. I kept up my coaching during this time, developing my leaderships skills in my local community and helping runners of all abilities.
Like many of us, I have also been affected and shaped by the challenging experiences in life including injury, loss, and times of uncertainty. Through it all I have found my inner strength to remain optimistic, worked hard to keep my sense of humour, and have used my mantra 'Run For Joy' to keep moving and evolving.
My mission is to spread the joy of sport and health, so others can move past obstacles, lead healthy lives and find personal success.
